A few of them have own pubs or restaurants but these hostels may not be among the cheaper ones.  The atmosphere varies and it is difficult to guess what you are really going to get. Restrictions on going out after midnight may be imposed on you in some hostels.  In a few others you may have to deposit a small sum to get a bed sheet and a towel.

One thing is for sure. You will meet a lot of new people and may develop new friendship during your stay in the hostels. The trend is most prominent in a Youth hostel in New York since younger people make friends easily. Most of the hostels now have their own cyber café or TV halls attached with the main building.  You can surf the nets in the cyber café over a cup of tea or coffee or a couple of drinks. Conversely you can watch your favorite programs or movies in the TV viewing room having a relaxing time.
