The Task At Hand
Everyone can probably remember a time when they have done it, when they have tripped on their own shoelaces. It is one of the most common embarrassing moments. The funny thing about tripping on laces is that it is not really something that you fix as you get older. There are just as many grown men and women tripping over the laces of their Gucci shoes as there are children tripping over their Keds. The only difference is that children seem to get over it faster.
For some reason adults have this mindset that since they are older and more responsible and own nice things like Gucci, they should never befall such foolishness as tripping over their own laces. But the fact that they own nice things like Gucci or Prada shoes has nothing to do with the real cause of these unfortunate spills.
For the most part, people do silly things like running into walls and tripping over their laces because they are so preoccupied with something that they forget to pay attention to the duller task at hand – walking. Adults are thinking about the date they had last night or the business meeting they have this afternoon, while children are thinking about the video game they want to play or the snack waiting for them in the kitchen.
For both young and old, tripping over laces could be avoided if people would just pay a little more attention the tasks at hand.
