Website Accessibility
In addition to creating web design pages that are accessibility to everyone, we now have strict laws in place that require accessibility. This means that if you have an ecommerce website, your web design must include options for people who are visually disabled, hearing disabled, cognitive disabled, and even physically disabled. With millions of people using computers and the internet around the world, these new laws protect those who are challenged by providing them a means in which to enjoy the same things.
In this article, we wanted to touch on each of these disabilities, as well as why it is so important your web design provide support.
- Visual – In this case, you might have customers who are completely blind or simply colorblind. In either situation, seeing images that many take for granted is difficult, if not impossible. A simple solution is to provide text descriptions so these individuals can read about the products you sell.
- Hearing – For individuals who have hearing loss, the reverse would be true in which case images can speak volumes. In this case, you could provide a great visual along with text descriptions to reach the hearing disabled audience.
- Cognitive – Obviously, this type of disability is a bit more challenging. If your product and/or service are geared toward people with a cognitive disability, you want to keep the overall website design simple and clean, while providing excellent navigation.
- Physical – Finally, setting the website up so there are simple buttons to push can make navigation much easier. Additionally, you can provide drop-down menus whereby the customer can choose from an existing list rather than typing information into a form.
